Each member of the Zephyr quintet, which was formed in 1980 by clarinettist Chris Swann, is an experienced musician of repute. The ensemble’s style has drawn praise over the years for the sensitivity and energy of its interpretations. The programme for Dolgellau will include pieces by Verdi, Reicha, Milhaud and Malcolm Arnold.
7 November, 2008 Daniela Lehner(mezzo-soprano), Armin Zanner (Bariton), Jose Gayo (piano)
Daniela Lehner is the winner of a 2007 Philip and Dorothy Green Award, and has already given recitals in the Wigmore and Carnegie Halls, at Aldeburgh, and in the Oxford Lieder Festival. A native of Glasgow, Armin Zanner has sung under distinguished conductors such as William Christie and Maasaki Suzuki, and is currently studying with Tom Krause.
28 November, 2008 Robin Ireland (viola), Tim Horton (piano)
From 1985 to 2005 Robin Ireland was violist in ‘the Lindsays’, and since 2005 he has been with the Sorrel Quartet. He is also an established soloist in his own right. Tim Horton first appeared in Dolgellau with the Orsino Piano Trio, back in 1999. Robin and Tim will be presenting works by Bach, Schubert, Britten, Rebecca Clarke and Prokofiev.
16 January, 2009 Alexander Karpeyev (piano)
An infant prodigy from a non-musical Russian family, ‘Sasha’ Karpeyev has received training in Moscow and London, and won prizes in Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, France and England, where in 2007 he won first prize in the Dudley International Piano Competition. His Wigmore Hall début in March 2008 was a sell-out, and was rapturously received.
13 February, 2009 Boreas Trio
The combination of violin, oboe and piano is an unusual one, and makes possible an unusually varied and interesting programme. These talented young musicians will be playing duets as well as trios, in a programme that ranges from Bach, Beethoven and Salieri to Schumann and Elgar.
13 March, 2009 Barbirolli String Quartet
Sponsorship from the Countess of Munster Musical Trust gives us the chance to hear this exceptional quartet, which has just received acclaim for its first performances in the Purcell Room and the Wigmore Hall (April 2008). In the programme will be quartets by Haydn, Brahms and Ravel.
3 April, 2009 Simon Kohli and friends
This final event of the season will provide a complete contrast, and present a mixture of Indian, English and Irish instrumental folk music. The group will be led by Simon Kohli on sarod (a form of sitar), with backing from fiddle, tabla, bodhran and melodeon. A schools workshop will also be arranged in collaboration with Ty Siamas.
