Venue: Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor
The hall of Coleg Meirion-Dwyfor has an exceptionally warm acoustic, equally responsive to the extremes of stronger forces such as choirs or brass ensembles, or of intimate sonorities such as those of the guitar. Generous amounts of wood-panelling in the hall no doubt contribute to this. Many visiting artists comment on the beauty of the acoustic environment, and express a wish to be able to use it for recording purposes.
The nature of the hall makes it possible to bring the musicians very close to their audience, and this provides an intimacy of musical experience which is often commented upon and is rarely to be found in larger, more famous venues.
The Coleg's Bechstein piano, purchased at the time of the move to the Dr Williams' buildings in 1978, has an attractive tonal range, and is more than adequate to most of the demands placed upon it. As a recital instrument it is in need of some maintenance work. In the autumn of 2002 it underwent a major overhaul, and it is tuned several times each season to keep it the peak of condition.
Location of the Club's venue in a place of education has a number of advantages, and makes it a natural focal point for the many workshops arranged by the Club. The site is 10 minutes' walk from the town centre, which is a drawback from the point of view of senior citizens, but is compensated for by the ease and proximity of parking. There is same-level access for the disabled.
The Coleg site is extremely easy to find for visitors from further afield, being the first large set of buildings encountered (on the right) after taking the Dolgellau exit from the A470 by-pass North-South, or the last buildings on the left after passing through Dolgellau and before rejoining the A470 by-pass South-North.
